What if we went to the Opera Garnier?

It is an outing you will not forget. There is the ritual of climbing the steps of the marble staircases, the grand hall, the thick carpet, the hubbub of the audience, the orchestra tuning up, the waiting anticipation while admiring Chagall’s ceiling, and finally enjoying the show itself.

Would you like to experience, or re-live, all this at Garnier?

We have selected 3 shows from the Opera Garnier’s program, which is divided between operas, ballets, and concerts, which we hope will give you a great experience.

La clémence de Titus (The Clemency of Titus) – from 15 November to 25 December 2017

Opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Duration: 2:45 – 1 Intermission

Mozart wrote this opera seria (serious opera as opposed to the opera buffa, that is, comic) shortly before his death and could not refuse this request for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia and, all the while, he was composing the Magic Flute. This opera has long been unappreciated yet it contains some of Mozart’s most beautiful pieces.

Titus, the Emperor of Rome, loves Berenice. He learns that the ambitious Vitellia is carrying out a plot to marry her. The latter manipulates Sextus, who is enamored of Vitellia and a very close friend to Titus. After going through various stages of judgment, the emperor finally shows his benevolence and forgives the conspirators.

Ticket prices: from € 45 to 290, depending on the category and date of reservation.

Jephta from 13 to 30 January 2018

Opera in 3 acts by Georg Friedrich Handel – Length: 3:05 – 1 Intermission

Fans of Handel’s classic and solemn style will be satisfied with this last piece in this genre composed by the master in 1751; it is often considered by music lovers as Handel’s testamentary work.

To deliver his people from the yoke of the Ammonites, Jephta prays to God to give him victory and he swears that, if victorious, he will sacrifice the first person he meets. The victory realized, Jephta, to his great sorrow, sees his daughter coming towards him. With words of lamentation and resignation, death is prevented by the providential intervention of an angel who saves Jephta’s daughter from the sacrifice.

The work features an aesthetic and creative staging directed by Claus Guth who has done previous adaptations of Handel.

Orphée et Eurydice – Choreography by Pina Bausch

Dance opera in four scenes by Christoph Willibald Gluck – Duration: 2:20 – 1 intermission

It has been 12 years since Pina Bausch’s dance opera was in the Paris Opera’s ballet repertory. It is one of Pina Baush’s first works, created in 1975, and you can find the purity, finesse, and modernity of the artist’s movements in the choreography.

Hades, god of the Underworld, authorizes Orpheus to bring Eurydice, his beloved, with him on the condition that he does not look at her once throughout the journey. Eurydice is astonished by Orpheus’ indifference to her. She begs him and her insistence gets the better of Orpheus’ determination and he yields and turns to her, condemning the lovers to eternal separation.
